In providing a venue for youngsters to live and work together New Petra promotes practical skills in boat handling, catering and languages whilst providing an opportunity to develop inter-personal skills through a residential experience.
New Petra can carry 10 youngsters in five 2 berth cabins with three adjacent showers and toilets. Leaders in charge have en-suite accommodation. There is air conditioning and a large sun deck.
A qualified skipper and cook/2nd hand are provided from our small team of unpaid volunteers.  Safety and security are very important and a few simple rules are explained to groups on arrival.
Welcome to New Petra
New Petra Terneuzen

New Petra is a 31m Dutch barge built in 1965 working out of Rotterdam until 2000.  The professional conversion took 3 years and conforms to EC safety standards. She is not adapted for those with physical disabilities, but is used by young people in the 12 to 20 age group, many of whom are socially or mentally disadvantaged. We also welcome user groups from organisations such as Scouts, Guides, Interact, Duke of Edinburgh scheme etc.
Learning to live and work together in the confines of a boat not only develops the self-confidence and social skills so important in todays’ society, but encourages a spirit of teamwork.
The barge is based in Oostende - about an hour from Calais - and used by groups from a variety of backgrounds and locations to further their aims in a water-borne environment while sailing on the canals of Flanders.
